Know the Past to See the Future

When you enter the 301 gallery, you will see the work titled “Know the Past to See the Future”, tailor-made for the National Museum of History by the Taiwanese artist Tu Wei-cheng. Take a careful look at the objects in the compartments. Do any of the items rouse your memory? Do any have a presence in your life? In essence, the Museum reflects the sentiments of the human world through artifacts, preserving stories and passing on memories and cultures. This collective work of art made by the people of Taiwan today is the crystallization of the contemporary spirit of the Museum.

“Vessel of Fleeing Souls” in the center of the gallery is one of the representative works of Tu Wei-cheng’s Bu Num Civilization series. On top of the ruins of a fictitious ancient civilization, the artist used computer peripherals such as mice, USB connectors, ethernet ports, and charging cables to weave a complex pattern. Combined with indigenous Taiwanese butterflies and plants, a beautiful totem has been constructed that leaves one in awe, symbolizing the unique ecosystem and technological successes of this land.

For decades, the National Museum of History has passed on the core spirit of history and culture through the research and exhibition of artifacts from the Museum’s collection. At the same time, starting with the National Gallery, the Museum has become a platform for the exchange of Taiwanese fine arts, allowing artists from different cultural backgrounds to converge, breaking new ground, and moving towards the international community. After its renovation, the Museum once more embraces society and uses history as a media to connect with the multicultural present and look to the future together.
